How To Apply

General Information

Application forms for entry into the Ph.D. and Professional Masters programs may be accessed electronically at the MSU Office of Admissions and Scholarships web site. The proper Microbiology and Molecular Genetics departmental code to use for the PhD program is 7030 and that for the Professional  Masters Program is 7000. Copies of applications for admission and accompanying documents, including transcripts of all prior college education, a personal letter of intent and objective, scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations, and three letters of recommendation from academics, should be returned to the Graduate Secretary by a December 1st deadline for consideration for admission the following academic year. Because many fellowship opportunities are awarded prior to this deadline, applications are reviewed as they are completed and earlier submissions (prior to December 1st) will be advantageous to applicants. The original application forms, a statement of financial support, and transcripts should be sent to the University's Office of Admission and Scholarships. Admission decisions are made by the department's Graduate Committee, Graduate Recruiting Officer, and Chairperson.

Applicants for entry into the Ph.D. and Professional Masters programs in microbiology and molecular genetics should have preparation in physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and mathematics through the calculus level in addition to courses in the biological sciences. Preparation in the fundamentals of microbiology is desirable but not necessary. Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and grades of 3.0 or above in quantitative science courses, including mathematics. Interested students with degrees in any of the physical or biological sciences are invited to apply.

For additional information, contact the Graduate Program Coordinator.
