Post Doctoral Positions:

Structure of microbial communities.

Opportunities are available for 2 post doctoral researchers to bring their skills to the exploration of relationships between the structure of microbial communities and the ecosystem level services they provide. Research will be focused on the stunning evolutionary diversity and metabolic versatility of microbial communities in soil, complemented by extensive datasets that include process level measurements and environmental characterization of the Kellogg Biological Station Long Term Ecological research site (http://lter.kbs.msu.edu) and other sites in the LTER network (http://www.lternet.edu).  Experience with modeling, ecological theory or contemporary microbiological approaches is particularly desirable.  Please send a curriculum vitae, brief statement of research interests and names of three references to:  Tom Schmidt, Dept. Microbiology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824 (tschmidt@msu.edu).  Salary range $36,000 – $41,000.

Studies of type II secretion: the Vibrio cholerae type II pseudopilus

Laboratory of Dennis N. Arvidson, Ph.D.

A postdoctoral position is available immediately at Michigan State University, for one year with the possibility of renewal based on funding availability and performance. The aim of the project is to employ bacterial genetics, x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, biochemical and biophysical studies to develop and validate models for the base, shaft and tip of the type II pseudopilus. This collaborative project involves three laboratories at MSU (Arvidson, Wedemeyer and Bagdasarian) and offers excellent interdisciplinary research opportunities. The Arvidson laboratory is located in the new Biophysical and Medical Sciences building. As LS-CAT members we have regular use of synchrotron beamlines at the APS.

Experience in molecular biology, excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to guide junior group members are required. Experience in protein purification and/or x-ray crystallography is also desired, but not required.

Applications should include a full CV, publication list, and at least two names and contact information for references.

Send to Dennis Arvidson at arvidso4@msu.edu. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and until the position is filled.
