George Garrity, Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, has been awarded the distinction as this year’s American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.  AAAS members are recognized for their efforts to advance their area of science.  Dr. Garrity is receiving this honor for outstanding contributions to bacterial systematics, including editorship of Bergey's Manual.

Garrity is a co-founder of NamesforLife, LLC, an MSU spinoff company that is commercializing a proprietary semantic resolution technology for tracking and managing dynamic life-science terminologies. He served as editor-in-chief of Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology from 1996-­2006 and currently serves as vice-chairperson of the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes and is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial Microbiology. He received a doctor of science in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
